Zig Zag Band makes grand return

The re-emergence of the yester-year legendary music group Zig Zag Band marked by their comeback album titled Harder than a Rock, will certainly reignite the local music landscape. After several false starts, Zig Zag has finally released its long-awaited project, which is expected to elevate the legendary music band to its former glory.
The 10 track album — released last week, was initially earmarked to be out during the festive season last year before being postponed to January.
The album is laced with the traditional chigiyo beat, which will come as a plus for the eight member outfit.
Chigiyo music is a reflection of cultural norms and values through song, which actually summon the spiritual realm to the attention of the living — one of the reasons why many listeners easily related to the genre.
This was evidenced in a series of timeless classic such as Gomo Ramasar, Nyarunde, Ropa Remuka-ranga, VaMandela, Hombiro, among other chartbusters.
During this period, the band shared the limelight together with living music greats such as superstar, Oliver Mtukudzi, exiled chimurenga guru, Thomas Mapfumo ways in 2005 having lost some of its original members.
Zig-Zag suffered a number of setbacks in the mid-90s and early 2000 when some of its key members died.
The legendary Emmanuel Nkomo of the Gomo Ramasare fame, Stanley Phiri, a drummer and the Lunga brothers, George and Robert are among those who passed away.
The new outfit consists of two original members — Isaac Phiri and Steven Lunga who are working together with Sunduzwayo Nyirenda, Nowel Kasirai, Julius Ziva, Raphael Chigumbu, Manfred Mahati and Madison Phiri who is the band manager.
Phiri better known as True Born Rasta (TBR) said the band is set to reclaim its lost glory despite having lost some of its critical members.
“As the title denotes, we are here to reclaim our lost pride. We are back better and harder than ever,” said TBR.
He said it has been a long time coming after they regrouped in 2011 as they have been taking their time to perfect their beat.
Songs to look out for on the new project are the title track, which depicts chigiyo music as indestructible, Ndinokuyeuka, Moses, Varoyi neMbavha and Chigiyo Nditakure.
