Sulu ready for UK tour

oliver tukuLegendary musician Oliver Mtukudzi and Orchestra Dendera Kings frontman Sulumani Chimbetu are set to travel to the United Kingdom for a week-long tour at the end of March. The tour, dubbed The Greatest Hits Tour,  is being organised by a UK-based promoter – Y2K.

The shows were supposed to have been held last year on October 25- 26, but were postponed to this year after Mtukudzi pulled out last minute. The tour will kick off in London at The Royal Regency on March 21 followed by another performance in Leicester at Maher Centre the following day (March 22).
Speaking to the Financial Gazette, Chimbetu’s publicist Joe Nyamungoma confirmed about the impending tour saying Ochestra Dendera Kings is making final preparations.

“Will be travelling to UK with the full band where we are going to share the stage with the “Super Star” during the week –long tour,” said Nyamungoma. “It is a privilege to be given an opportunity to tour the UK. We hope to do our best as we seek to tame the foreign market.”

Sulumani who has been duped by bogus promoters in some of his previous visits to the country hopes the upcoming tour will be successful. Nyamungoma has, however, expressed gratitude to the promoter of the show for having confidence in Sulu. There is no doubt the shows will be a rare treat for Tuku and Dendera fans. The duo has collaborated in different projects before.

Sulu and Tuku collaborated on the hit song Kwedu which has become an instant hit on the local showbiz scene. For Mtukudzi, judging by his experience in the industry, there are no doubts that fans will be guaranteed sterling performances at the shows. The musician is gifted with a deep, raspy voice and talent for writing songs that reflect on the daily life and struggles of people.

Tuku is a celebrated musician who has won several awards both locally and internationally. Early this month he was presented with the Global Service Award by the Skagit Valley College in the United States of America for his contribution to children’s rights. The award was presented to him during his tour of the United States.

UK is proving to be a favourite hunting ground for Zimbabwean musicians attesting by the number of musicians who include dancehall musician Winky D and contemporary musician Jah Prayzah among others who have toured that country to stage live shows.
